Keep Sailing Fun

Luff N Laff  December 2022

Our Gulf Coast Sailing Club Mission:

As Naples and Southwest Florida’s leading volunteer sailing club, we support inter-club racing, cruising, day sailing, social events, and boating education for the benefit of sailors and their families. Let’s keep it fun.

From The Commodore:

Trudell Kolpack

November brought me a lot to be thankful for personally: One of the Kolpack traditions is to go around the table and say what we are thankful for and the kids always say something funny. This year, I was pleasantly surprised when my wife Laura said “I am most thankful that we are able to enjoy so much family time, when we go out sailing.” I agreed and so did the kids! It must have been the Ladies Day Regatta and raft up that had sailing on everyone’s mind.

Laura and Jenna had so much fun getting on the water for the Ladies Day Regatta. We had a wonderful turnout with many boats participating in the race. I personally enjoyed watching all the “boat kids” gather around the fishing pole to pull up some pretty big fish from Champney bay. What a fun family event! It was great to celebrate all of the women who took the helm for this competition!

I’m looking forward to the offshore race this weekend and the Naples Boat parade.

I have been seeing our last speaker (Captains for Clean Water) on TV frequently. I was happy to see such a great turnout for the November meeting. It was nice to welcome back some more of our seasonal residents. I look forward to seeing you all at our upcoming December meeting and Christmas Party. I hope you all continue to enjoy the holiday season with friends and family!

Thanks,
Tru

From The Vice Commodore:

John Steiner

Greetings Members,  This month I have two topics to report:
1. Landside Events / Meeting Management (LEMM) Committee.
The LEMM is responsible for planning, staffing and running various activities. Those include monthly GCSC Membership Meetings, socialization activities that, ideally, have a water theme (e.g. pool parties, beach gatherings, etc.).
We are fortunate that Bruce Leng and Linda Haller volunteered to lead LEMM this season, while they are in Naples.  Since they are seasonal, the LEMM Committee needs more volunteers for the entire season.
Please volunteer to assist Bruce and Linda with LEMM activities.
Bruce can be reached at:
OR via cell phone at: (612) 209-8001
2. 10,000 Islands Boating Excursion
I've decided to wait until January  to transit through the 10,000 islands via powerboats.  About 16 members have  expressed interest in this excursion.  I assume that most of us have heard about hazardous water conditions; ranging from flesh eating bacteria to submerged obstacles throughout the 10,000 Islands.   In addition, I'll not be in Naples for the second half of December.
That said, I'll send out another, detailed planning e-mail about this excursion in the near future.
Hope that we can make this happen sometime in January!
Sincerely,
John Steiner
Vice Commodore

From The Rear Commodore:

Jeff Gage

Upcoming Races:  Racing Calendar

We are planning the New Year's Cup to have a fleet start. Plans are tentative as we recover from hurricane Ian. Check www.yachtscoring.com for details including skippers meeting and awards party and any fees for participants.More details will be forthcoming

If you are interested in racing post-Ian, please let Jeff know: racing@gulfcoastsailingclub.org

Please watch the Calendar on the website for updates, as well as emails from the Club.

Ian has affected our racing schedule and there are still unknowns right now. Thanks for your patience.

RACING:

Ladies Day Regatta:

We had a fantastic day on the water. It was blowing 10 to 14 kn out of the north east. We sailed from the pier to Dr‘s Pass and back to Gordon’s. It was a beautiful reach to doctors with lots of puffs. Once we rounded doctors, it was a matter of staying in the puffs going downwind and heading up in the lull’s . The big winner was Arts new boat the corsair 37, Banc, he was first to finish. The really great thing was the raft up afterwards. As you will see in the pictures, we had a fantastic time. It was an incredible piece of timing. We had the most fantastic weather on Saturday and turn the garbage on Sunday.
The next event will be on December 3, the Naples to Fort Myers race. Except we won’t be going to Fort Myers. We are going to start to west within 200 yards of the green buoy at Gordon’s Pass sale south to Caxambas pass marker, round that to port and finish due West, within 200 yards of the green marker off of Gordon’s pass.

CRUISING:

TO CRUISE OR NOT TO CRUISE

That is the question on every sailor’s mind right now!  Many of the marinas and anchorages we like to go to are not operational and it’s unclear what the timing will be for some of them.  There are still water quality and debris issues to consider when going out.

During last month’s meeting, the Captain’s for Clean Water suggested that we don’t go IN the water or eat any locally caught shellfish or shrimp but going out ON the water should be ok.

We are seeing sailboats going out for day sailing and some cruising down to the Ten Thousand Islands (Panther / Indian / Tiger key).  While not a complete list, these are some issues that have been reported:

  • Still finding debris in the water, so be on high alert at all times.
  • Some channel markers are missing or not on station, even some replaced ones.
  • Some channels have shifted, as reported in Big Marco pass.

Starting next week, we are organizing a couple of outings via power boats to check our clubs more popular cruising areas.  We will start with the Ten Thousand Islands and later in the month go up to Charlotte Harbor and check out the areas around Cayo Costa, Boca Grande and Cabbage Key.

The intent is to get some first-hand intel on what those areas look like and report back to our club members.

Marathon Marlin Resort and Marina is fully operational so if you are considering the club event in March, please sign up and make your reservations!

Stay safe, be careful and have fun!  If you have any news on any of the cruising grounds in SWFL please feel free to share with me directly.

Pink Shell and Smokehouse Bay are cancelled due to hurricane Ian - but we have now planned a fun one-day event in January! Check the website  Cruising Overview for details!

Here are the current dates for the 2022-2023 cruising schedule. More information is posted on the GCSC website herCruising Overview with the opportunity to register, including landside dinners either the day before or during some of the events.
