From The Vice Commodore:

John Steiner

Ahoy GCSC Members from your Vice Commodore! This month I have two topics to report:

1. 10,000 Islands powerboat excursion details.
When:  January 25, 2023. Wednesday; from Noon to 4 p.m.
Where:  Port 32 Marco Island, 705 E. Elkcam Circle, Marco Island, 34145 Phone: (239) 307-0556
Who: GCSC Members, family and friends
What: Rental boat: Cobia 22 foot Bowrider, 200 hp, up to 7 people per boat

Next steps:  Please decide who will skipper your boat and who is going with you
Make your reservations as soon as possible.
I will make a reservation for one boat that I'll skipper.
As of December 30, Port 32 informs that 4 boats are available for the afternoon of January 25.

To reserve a boat go to:  port32marinas.com
IMPORTANT:  Make sure you are reserving at PORT 32 MARCO ISLAND

We will transit through East Marco Bay, then down Big Marco River to Goodland, then to Helen Key and Cape Romano.  Same route in return.

2. GCSC Storage Locker Organization / Clean Out
We need volunteers to help with this job; which hasn't been tackled in many years. Our storage locker is at 517 Airport Pulling Road.
It is about 8 x8 and packed with event supplies, signs, coolers, etc.
We need to remove the contents, decide what to keep and repack the locker.
With a team of 3 or 4 volunteers, we could complete the job in about 2 hours.

Please e-mail me with your contact information if you're willing to help.
Once I confirm who will volunteer, we'll plan a date and time for this exciting task!

Cheers,
John Steiner

CRUISING:

KEEWAYDIN ISLAND - Day Event

Sail and anchor off Keewaydin Island on January 21. Join other sailors on the beach for a day of sun and fun.  Plan to arrive no later than 11am and spend the day on the beach.  Eat lunch, on the beach or on your boat and HAVE FUN!

If you have room on your boat for guests, please let Bob Andreini know and we will get a crew request out prior to the event.  You can email him at: Cruising@gulfcoastsailingclub.org

Where:

Keewaydin Island - Gulf Side

N 26°02.188'

W 081°46.607'

This location is about 550’ offshore in about 10’ of water at low tide.

Panther Key – Recon Trip

Panther Key is not until Feb 18, but you should start planning to join us on this club favorite weekend cruise.

As many people are concerned about the conditions after the hurricane, Rick Reed and myself did a recon trip mid-December.  What we found is that the everything is as we expected it to be.  We drove around the anchorage and the channel into and found no issues with shoaling or shifting.  The beach looked to be in great shape!  On our way out we went through the Cape Romano Shoals and found the favorite shortcut everyone likes to take to be intact.

All in all, it appears that conditions are looking very good for this trip and we hope that we can see you all out on the water for the weekend!  Next month, we will have more information on Panther Key and other cruises during our 2023 season!

Here are the current dates for the 2022-2023 cruising schedule. More information is posted on the GCSC website herCruising Overview with the opportunity to register, including landside dinners either the day before or during some of the events.
