Cup (NOR and
Entry Form coming soon) Naples' Hamilton Harbor: Site of the GCSC March,
2009 Regatta
Featuring a Saturday Night Dinner Keynote Presentation by
Dawn Riley, one of the best-known sailors in
the world. Dawn is featured as part of the US SAILING's Mount Gay Rum Speaker
Series, first created in 2005 as a grassroots, educational series delivering
high quality seminars to cruising and racing sailors nationwide. The Series has
proven to be very successful in its first three years with more than 6,000
sailors attending 46 events. Dawn Riley is the first
woman ever to manage an entire Americas Cup syndicate, the first
American, man or woman, to sail in four Americas Cups and two Whitbread
Round the World races, and is one of the forerunners in providing access into
the sport of sailing. Dawn recently returned
from Spain where she was the General Manager of the French Americas Cup
Team, AREVA Challenge. Dawn was a co-host on OLN for the 2003 Americas
Cup coverage and has worked for PBS and ESPN. She authored
numerous articles and the book Taking the Helm.
A limited number of Dawn Riley
Dinner/Keynote Tickets will be available for people not participating in the
Regatta ... contact ChrisD@GulfCoastSailingClub.org. This promises to be
the best SW Florida sailing presentation for racers and non racers in 2009.

Race
Report from GCSC's Rear Commodore Jason Richards
on his Annapolis to Bermuda race [Sponsors The
Eastport Yacht Club and the St. George's Dinghy and Sports Club have structured
this race to provide a combination of inshore and offshore racing. This
includes piloting through the 125 miles of Chesapeake Bay coastal waters and
navigation of the 628 mile offshore leg.]

The NOAA guy said North at 5
kts for the start. My cousin Paul and I made faces at each other and said yea
right. NOAA does not take into consideration the sea breeze that always fills
in from the south straight up the Chesapeake bay. At the start it was blowing
10 to 15 kts from the south. This was going to be a long
beat. It was fun watching the Navy 44's
trade tacks down the bay as we tried to keep them behind us for as long as we
could. We finally went over the tunnel about 20 hrs from the start. We made the
turn towards Bermuda and the sea breeze had also turned SSE making it a close
hauled reach SW in 20 kts. Off shore
about 6 nm the breeze was laying down and shifting SW. The asymmetrical kite
went up and we were off. We were averaging 8+ kts and surfing at 11 kts, this
was the sailing we were hoping for. A last check of the gulf stream did not
seem to give us reason to leave the rum line so the shortest distance made the
most sense.
 Somewhere in the middle we
made good use of our Garmin XM real time weather which was displaying in full
color reds and yellows fast approaching from the stern. Once the storms were
visible the the reds and yellows on the Garmin showed up as dark gray in real
life. As we watched the approaching
clouds funnels appeared and we followed Paul's offshore motto (reef often and
early) with a storm jib. Only one funnel reached the sea and we all hoped the
boats behind would be OK. The water spouts slid to the north and we were clear
for full sails. As Bermuda got closer
other boats began to appear on the horizon. We were making time on those in
front. There is nothing that gets you back to race mode like seeing boats after
600 nm into a race. Between boats on the horizon and Bermuda harbor radio clear
on VHF the excitement of a dark-n-stormy at the bar was setting in. But there
will be one final race to the finish
line. A cruise ship was approaching
from the stern. We all looked at each other and started to discuss if we could
make it in front. The finish line was the channel and there was only room for
one. The rules of tonnage applied and we let her pass costing us a few minutes
on our time. We finished about mid
fleet overall and with any race the experience will help us do better next
time. I have done both the Newport and Annapolis to Bermuda races and prefer
the Annapolis race, even with its smaller numbers the race is more laid back
and the St. George's Dinghy Club is less formal and more inviting.
The drinks at the club are half price
compared to the rest of the island. This makes them the same as in the US. We
are pretty spoiled here in Naples. Jason |

GARY SCHWARTING WINS THE 2008 KEY LARGO Melges REGATTA

From
the Helm Late December 2008 by Lisa
Brice LisaBrice@GulfCoastSailingClub.org
Hope everyone is enjoying
themselves as we wrap up 2008. I still find it hard to believe that we are
getting ready for the Winter Solstice and longer days. It seems like just last
week we were planning our summer fun races to The Naples Beach and Golf Resort
and dodging afternoon thunderstorms. Many
thanks to Judy Hansen, for leading us in 2008, your personality and use of
signal flags to decorate the room, made each meeting an adventure. I know that
Judy will be a great asset as the 2009 membership chair.
I am grateful that the membership elected Gary
Schwarting, Jason Richards, Cheryl Peppers, and Chris Divine to support me as
Commodore. I am thrilled to work with them as I take the helm.
2009 is going to be a year full of fun and a few
changes. It started last Saturday night [Dec. 13] with the Change of Watch
party at our new location of Hamilton Harbor Yacht Club (HHYC). We missed our
members who could not make it. It was a
beautiful night with delicious food. We even were able to see a few of the
boats all decorated for the parade, including one who came to visit us towing a
huge yellow duckie at least 15 ft high. To
help you plan your calendar: our 33rd Annual Regatta will take place the last
weekend of March with Dawn Riley as keynoter our speaker -- a first-rate naval historian author and
always entertaining -- at the April 8th meeting will be ROBERT MACOMBER.
Please help us spread the word on both events and remember to bring your
friends. I hope we will see everyone at the
January 14th meeting. Social time starts at 6:30pm with the meeting starting
promptly at 7. Please keep checking the
website for updates as I am finalizing getting some food for the meeting. Also,
please call me if you plan to arrive via boat because I have to clear it with
HHYC.
