34th Regatta Recap -- April Meeting
Review Naples' Trevor Moore, from the
US Sailing
Alpha Graphics 49er team reported that his team mate Erik Storck suffered
pulled tendons in stong wind practice in Spain, but is on way to recovery.
Great Q&A session delved into team rapport and how the team divides duties
and makes decisions. He related that they continually work on building their
"playbook" of proven moves. Trevor working hard to keep his edge temporarily
teaming up with another split 49er team member... also with one member out on
injury recovery.
Team now has new coach with
heavy 49er experience. With a couple of years to go for the Olympics, Trevor
has a positive outlook that Erik will be back on board soon in time for the
rest of this year's heavy schedule in Europe.
Help
support their Olympic campaign here as they have achieved
another milestone and are now US team Olympic members. Meanwhile GCSC
Commodore Jim Gunderson reported that the 34th annual regatta ran a full race
schedule both days with separate race courses for the Melges 24 and Phrf
fleets. The club continues to make this event the Mega Sailing Event of the
Naples sailing year. The 35th annual Regatta is now in planning
stages.
America's Cup/Olympics Update -- March Meeting Review In
perspective: Bob Billingham related the vast differences in today's sailing
with a detailed comparison of the 2010 America's Cup to the 2012 Olympic Games.
On one side it was all about using $200 million a piece from a couple of "rich"
guys to come up with the best technology and a personal competition. On the
other it is searching for, and supporting, driven and dedicated younger sailors
to personally perform as the best in the world.
Bob has the unique qualification only a few other sailors in the
US have ever achieved - winning both an America's Cup and an Olympic Medal.
With the cup it was engineers, scientists, BMW
Composite Material Labs, Oracle software research with well subsidized check
books. With the Olympics it is individual athletes working for years to
personally achieve that combination of brain power and physical condition
needed to be compete individually and in small teams. Bob outlined the support
programs for the athletics including medical, psychology, coaching, physical
training and fund raising.
Saving Sailing
... Can Do! -- February Meeting
Review: Participation in sailing is down 70% since 1979.
Saving Sailing is a hot topic: when the book by the same title burst onto the
scene in October, it quickly garnered 5-star reviews in the sailing media.
Author Nicholas
Hayes' lively and fast moving presentation used strong data to
support his campaign to promote "the family that sails together, stays
together, with kids to benefit from a life long happy participation in
sailing." Dad of two teenagers, his top
advice is to limit the amount of
time kids spend in front of cable TV and glued to a keyboard. Coordinate free
time of both parents and children to insure the family bonds together, he
explained, and naturally sailing is one of the best ways to achieve
this.SavingSailing.com.
In Search of Olympic Gold January Meeting Review: Erik Storck and Naples' Trevor
Moore, US Sailing Team AlphaGraphics 49er team, delighted the GCSC audience
with a spirited recap of their first year of a four-year campaign to medal in
the 2012 Summer Olympics in Weymouth GRB. Just the weekend earlier they had
moved up to the Gold Circle in the 49er 2010 World Championship in the Bahamas
and were the highest placing US team. Help support their campaign
here.

I
apologize for taking so long to get this next letter out. It's been a crazy
month or so for me - more on that later. Again, a BIG shout-out of thanks to
everyone involved in the Porsche of Naples Cup: Loads of fun, plentiful food
and drink, great wind on Sunday and we finished in the black.
I have a huge new appreciation for how
much work goes in to setting up and running a successful regatta. Give a
committee member a hug, each one has earned it.
Time for all you distance racers and
cruisers to get excited. Two fun things are happening this month. First is the
annual Naples to Key West race, which is being followed by a scheduled fun
cruise down to the Dry Tortugas. Information on each of these is here on the
website.
Beyond May, planning is underway
for the usual summer events: The Shipwreck talk @ June 12 meeting, the beach
picnic and the single/double handed races, as well as a Summer Jazz concert at
the Beach Club to name a few.
Keep an eye
on the website or emails coming through the Yahoo group for updates and
details.
Remember "I can't change
the direction of the wind, but I can always adjust my sails to reach my
destination".
Cheers! Jim
